CERT - Emergency Preparedness
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
Disaster often strikes quickly and without warning, local officers and responders will be overwhelmed due to the chaos. Having knowledge of what to do and having an emergency plan in place is your best protection. At Fremont High we think that preparing for emergency situations is vital and have curated a four step plan to further prepare you and your families:
- Consider your environment and location and find out what types of emergencies could potentially occur near you
- Winter storm, wildland fire, earthquake, cold/heat wave, fires, hazardous materials
- Create a disaster plan with your family according to the disasters that may occur in your area. Assign a designated meeting area and evacuation paths.
- Use this checklist as an aid in your emergency planning:
- Post emergency telephone numbers by phones
- Teach children how and when to call 9-1-1
- Show each family member how to turn off water, gas, and electricity
- Check that you have adequate insurance coverage
- Teach each family member how to use a fire extinguisher
- Install smoke detectors
- Conduct a home hazard hunt
- Stock emergency supplies and assemble a disaster supplies kit
- Take a Red Cross first aid and CPR class
- Practice and maintain your plan by quizzing your children, conducting drills, adding to storage, etc.
By following this four step plan you and your family will not be left feeling underprepared and stressed due to the mayhem that is and follows a disaster.
Fremont’s Community Emergency Response Team is designed to raise awareness and further prepare and protect the community in the case of a disaster. The CERT team is trained in an online course, four hands-on sessions, and a mass casualty simulation. CERT classes are offered during the spring and fall.
